POSTPARTUM CARE
The postpartum period is defined as the 6-8 week period following the birth of a baby when the physiologic effects of pregnancy are returning to the non-pregnant state. Sounds simple, right? Sure, if you’re not trying to navigate caring for, and feeding a newborn while absolutely exhausted from lack of sleep…
This time period is a unique experience that comes with varying physical and emotional needs. What we know for sure is that it is a period of time filled with emotionality, love, concern, joy, frustration, and an overall need to be understood without having to give a lengthy explanation that wouldn’t make sense in any language under the sun. It is a confusing and explorative time; you are literally finding yourself as a parent and learning the needs of your baby at the same time…
At Doulas for Life, our postpartum doulas, zero in on the three things that matter most when it comes to supporting you.
Your physical, mental and emotional recovery from giving birth. This includes recognizing what is “normal”, and what may be beyond the scope of normal. We focus on all things relating to your healthful adjustment to life as a parent.
Your baby’s adjustment to life outside of the womb. This includes feeding support, proper latch and positions, paced-feeding, bottle prep, breast milk storage, bathing, cord care, safe sleep, gentle soothing techniques, and so much more.
Anything that might get in the way of numbers 1 and 2. This includes meal and snack preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, newborn product and safety information, scheduling appointments, assistance with errands, and so much more.
The Postpartum period can be overwhelming for new parents, requiring emotional, mental, and physical support. Postpartum Doulas provide unbiased guidance and assistance with newborn care, infant feeding support, meal prep and light household tasks. The doula acts as an extra set of eyes, ears, and hands, observing every need and strategizing routines that align with unique parenting philosophies. Their informational support is limitless, as they stay current on all things relating to babies and their parents, including safety recommendations set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Our goal is to help families navigate this challenging time and provide a sense of relief and support. POSTPARTUM (Minimum 5 Hour Shifts)
