Description
Fine lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles can be an inevitable part of aging. They add character to our faces and serve as testimony to a lifetime of emotions. But, there are times when we wish we could have more control over how we age. Wrinkle relaxers can help with that.
Botox is the most common wrinkle relaxing product on the market. It is minimally invasive, relatively painless, safe, and quick (it requires little to no downtime). This FDA-approved injection helps prevent fine lines and reduces the appearance of existing wrinkles. In addition, it is also used for medical purposes like migraine prevention, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating, jaw clenching/teeth grinding and the treatment of movement disorders.

What Is Botox?
Botox is one of the most prolific neuromodulators, a class of drugs often referred to as “wrinkle relaxers.” It is the most widely used on the market and the world’s first approved medication of its kind. It has been in use by medical professionals since 1989 and today is practically synonymous with anti-aging. Often, people use the word “Botox” to refer to other neuromodulators as well.
In 2019, more than 5 million Botox and Botox-like injections were performed. In 2020, despite the global pandemic that kept people out of medical offices, that number held strong at more than 4.4 million. In both years, as fillers became increasingly more popular, neuromodulators still beat out dermal fillers by more than a million procedures.
Why Do We Need Botox?
As our bodies go through the natural aging process, a few critical functions begin to decline after the age of 20. (Well, more than a few, but a few pertaining to your cosmetic appearance specifically.) The first and most impactful is our production of collagen.
Collagen constitutes 30% of all the protein in our body, and it is the primary substance responsible for making sure our skin stays taut and youthful. So, when that production begins to wean, it can be expected to notice a decline in our skin's elasticity.
Other proteins like elastin and filler substances like hyaluronic acid also begin to decline around this age as well. There is nothing we can do to prevent these processes from occurring — even people who are dedicated to prevention will at some point notice their skin beginning to wrinkle.
Botox tackles the problems that result from this decline, like fine lines and wrinkles, by stopping the other function that causes them: muscle movement.
As we go about our days, we use our faces to convey feelings and supplement our words. Surprise, shock, envy, anger, irritation, intrigue, joy, contentedness, stress, boredom — these are just a few of the emotions that can be conveyed through facial expressions.
Unfortunately, it comes at a cost. Every time your face makes an expression, muscles contract and cause the skin in the area to fold. Fold it enough times and you begin to develop wrinkles that become painstakingly obvious whenever you are talking. Keep folding, and eventually, those wrinkles will be noticeable even when your face is at rest.
Stopping the movement before it happens can both prevent wrinkling from occurring and help to smooth out existing wrinkles. Unfortunately, there are no other categories of treatment that can address these facial conditions in the same way and with the same efficacy. To put it plainly, we need Botox because other options are few and far between.
